Fair Play Code

Partner and Expert in the Fight Against Match-Fixing and for Integrity in Sport

The Play Fair Code (Association for the Integrity of Sport) is an initiative of the Ministry of Sport (BMKÖDS), the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB), and the Austrian Football League (ÖFBL), which was founded and institutionalized in 2012.

Under the leadership and guidance of President Günter Kaltenbrunner, the goal of the Play Fair Code is to achieve clean and manipulation-free competitions together with Austria’s elite sports federations, athletes, coaches, support staff, and club officials through prevention measures, awareness-raising, training, and education.

The Play Fair Code initiative covers three essential pillars:

  • Prevention (training, education, and awareness-raising)
  • Monitoring
  • Central ombuds office for affected individuals

The Play Fair Code represents the most vulnerable sports (as they are bet on with market-relevant volumes), including football (ÖFB, ÖFBL), ice hockey (EBEL), basketball (ABL), skiing (ÖSV), handball (Handball Austria), and tennis (ÖTV).

In the field of prevention, training programs are implemented for professional athletes, referees, club and association officials, as well as youth and junior athletes.

With 600+ training sessions conducted and around 16,000+ Austrian and European athletes educated so far, prevention has been sustainably and comprehensively promoted through sports-specific training modules (storytelling, real-life examples and cases, videos, etc.), raising awareness against match-fixing and for the integrity of sports.

In addition to establishing an ombuds office, the Play Fair Code has become the central point of contact and advisory service for athletes, coaches, support staff, and other affected individuals in the field of match manipulation in Austrian sports.

Alongside Interwetten, members and partners of the Play Fair Code network include the Austrian Olympic Committee (ÖOC), Sport Austria – Austrian Federal Sports Organization, the Austrian Lotteries, the Austrian Sports Betting Association (OSWV), the Austrian Association for Betting and Gambling (OVWG), and other betting providers.

Play Fair Code President Günter Kaltenbrunner

"For us, it is important to have Interwetten on board as one of the most important sports betting providers in Austria. The integration of Interwetten and all our partners from the sports betting sector into the Austrian Association for Betting and Gambling is particularly important to us, as this commitment underscores the cross-industry interest in seriousness and integrity and aligns very well with the goals and objectives of the Play Fair Code."

With the activities of the past 8 years, a national Austrian action plan against match-fixing has been implemented together with all partners.

Internationally, the Play Fair Code is a valued and respected expert partner of various organizations and sports programs (UEFA, IOC, INTERPOL, IIHF, Erasmus+ programs, etc.).

At the European level, Play Fair Code supports and is involved in EU-funded Erasmus+ programs, including the projects:

  • European Rookie Cup (ERC)
  • Fix the Fixing (FtF)
  • Anti Match-Fixing Top Training (AMATT)
  • Against Match-Fixing (AMF)
  • South Eastern European Countries for the Integrity of Football Clubs (SEE-I)
  • Evidence-Based Prevention of Sporting-Related Match-Fixing (EPOSM)

For its efforts in the fight against match-fixing, the Play Fair Code was awarded the European Fair Play Diploma 2014.
